What does this Excel duplicate remover do?
VCFConverter removes duplicate records from one Excel worksheet using the columns you choose as a matching key. It creates a new XLSX workbook with retained rows, duplicate groups, and an audit report. Use it to clean customer lists, order exports, or inventory tables before importing them into another system.
- Input
- One XLSX or XLS workbook; select one worksheet and its header row.
- Output
- A new XLSX with Deduplicated (or Marked), Duplicates, and Dedupe Report worksheets.
- Price and privacy
- Free with no account or installation. Workbook contents are processed locally in your browser and are not uploaded to a server.
- Matching key
- One column, a combination such as customer ID plus order ID, or all columns for whole-row matching.
Which duplicate removal option should you use?
| Option | What happens | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Keep first | Keep the first row in each group, in source worksheet order. | Retain an earlier entry when later rows repeat it. |
| Keep last | Keep the last row in each group. Rows are not sorted by date. | Retain a later entry when the worksheet is already ordered as intended. |
| Mark only | Keep all data rows and add group IDs and source-row references. | Review duplicates before deciding which records to delete. |
Example: deduplicate by customer ID
Illustrative data, with row 1 as the header. Select Customer ID only and keep the first row using the default text rules.
| Source row | Customer ID | Name | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | C001 | Alice | Kept |
| 3 | c001 | Alice updated | Removed |
| 4 | C002 | Bob | Kept |
The 3 input rows produce 2 retained rows, 1 duplicate group, and 1 removed row. Both C001 rows appear in Duplicates. Selecting Name as an additional key makes the two C001 rows different, so both are kept.
How duplicate matching works
- All selected key columns must match. Other columns do not affect grouping, and values from different rows are never merged.
- By default, matching ignores leading/trailing spaces and letter case, and normalizes line endings. Full-width/half-width normalization is optional and off by default.
- Number 123 and text "123" are different values. An ID stored as text, such as "00123", stays distinct from numeric 123.
- Rows whose selected keys are all empty stay separate. Rows with partly empty keys can still form a duplicate group.
File limits and workbook handling
- Each file must be 10 MiB or smaller. A worksheet range is limited to 100,000 rows, 200 columns, and 1,000,000 cells; report size limits also apply.
- Only the selected worksheet is processed. Unmerge cells in the header and data area before running the tool.
- Formula results must already be saved in the source. Formulas are not recalculated; the output uses saved values and basic cell formats.
- Macros, charts, and all advanced Excel objects are not preserved. CSV is not accepted directly; save it as XLSX first. The original file is unchanged.

Excel duplicate remover FAQ
What counts as a duplicate?
Rows are grouped when all selected key columns match under your text matching settings.
Are empty keys removed?
No. Rows whose selected key columns are all empty stay separate.
Does the tool combine values from duplicate rows?
No. It keeps a complete original row or marks rows; it does not merge fields.
Are formulas recalculated?
No. The tool uses saved formula results. Recalculate and save the source if a result is missing.
Does this change my original file?
No. A new XLSX file is generated locally in your browser.
Are all Excel features preserved?
The result focuses on cell values and basic formats. Charts, macros, and other advanced workbook objects are not preserved.
Is this Excel duplicate remover free and private?
Yes. No account or installation is required. Workbook contents are processed in your browser and are not uploaded to a server. Download a new XLSX file when the result is ready.
Can I remove duplicates using multiple columns?
Yes. Select all columns that make up the record key. Selecting customer ID and order ID groups rows only when both values match. Select every column to find duplicate whole rows.
Can I remove duplicates from CSV files?
CSV is not accepted directly. Convert or save it as XLSX first, then select the worksheet and columns to check. The result is downloaded as XLSX.
